It burns, burns and burns again…never, within living memory, fire was seen to be so strong and resistant to human technologies…And yet it is whispered that, in France, as well (at least that's how it should be...sic!) in San Pietro or at the Milanese Cathedral, quasi-infallible security systems are in operation; real micro-devices complete with sensors connected to emergency response centers... But there seems to be nothing ready here, except for a fire that had broken out hours ago and was inexplicably indomitable. Media that quietly prophesy the destruction of one of the most beautiful architectural jewels in the world, while someone tells us that this was already destroyed by a previous fire a century or so ago and skilfully rebuilt, as if this were a belated consolation to what, now more than ever, it is becoming a symbol of the bonfire of a profoundly sick West and Europe. Sick with the most insidious and disgusting form of syphilis that a civilization can know: that of do-goodism. Sick of a religiosity that is no longer such, now reduced to a pure and simple mass media phenomenon, full of beautiful words, good intentions and nothing else, that is not a lax adaptation to the vital rhythms of a prevailing economic materialism.
Yet Notre Dame was built in that much-maligned Middle Ages , by Masters who intended to materialize with the square and the compass, that first intuition of the Infinite that is strong, hovered in those souls. If Greece had identified finiteness and limit, the hallmark of divine perfection, both through the anthropomorphic representation of the divine and through, symmetry and harmony in architecture and science, mathematics and geometry first and foremost, the Middle Ages would have instead, (under the pressure of Christianity but, also and above all, of the Gnostic and Neoplatonic instances, accompanied by the rational guise of Aristotelianism) projected the gaze towards the depths of that celestial "apeiron/infinity" that dominated man and towards which the spiers of the Cathedrals, they should have reached out. An Ars Regia of construction supervised all this, expressed and regulated in formulas, harmonies and proportions that, directly, they referred to a sacred concept of geometry and mathematics, so close to that Pythagoreanism, whose requests continued to hover silently among those ancient Masters. Yet Notre Dame burns...And that it was a causal event, due to incompetence, to the sloppiness and complete deficiency of someone, or what, is due to a desired and planned hostile act, little or nothing matters. Notre Dame burns and with it, someone would like to burn and send our roots of civilization and culture to ashes, understood as a vision of the world, as the survival of peoples and identities, in favor of an anodyne and shapeless mass of alienated people, devoted to consumption and self-consumption yes and yes, seamlessly.
That identity, fruit of the sedimentation of white peoples, Indo-Europeans and pre-Indo-Europeans, which had the Greco-Roman civilization as its first great unitary synthesis, subsequently replaced by the synthesis between the barbaric spirit of the Celts and Germanic peoples with the Latin civilization, passing through the return to the centrality of Man, banner of the Renaissance, passing through the magical spirit that hovered in the Baroque, until the birth of an overbearing Modernity, divided and torn between the Enlightenment, Positivism, Progressivism, Liberalism and between Irrationalism, Vitalism, Futurism and Avant-garde. All this melange of contradictory elements, all this sediment in such a small geographical space, compared to those of the various New and Third Worlds, brings us back, as if by magic, to the image of the Battle of Thermopylae, when the small and silent West stopped and routed the vociferous and arrogant masses coming from the East, preserving a heritage of identity and culture, one of a kind. All of this is US, let's try not to forget it and, now more than ever, not to let anyone forget, one way or another, he thinks he intimidates us, to submit to his dirty reasons.
“I offer what remains of my life with the intention of a protest and a foundation. I choose a highly symbolic place, the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral which I respect and admire, which was built by the genius of my ancestors on older places of worship that recall our immemorial origins” (Dominique Friends)
