The Sun 24 Ore he published a dense article by neurosurgeon Arnaldo Benini about cannabis and the effects that its legalization would produce, as certain increasingly frequent pressures in this sense would like; let's think about Ddl presented last year by Senator Nadia Ginetti (Pd) et al most recent by Matteo Mantero (M5S).
Rightly Benini invites us to dispel the cliché according to which «being in favor of liberalization would be left-wing and the opposite would be right-wing». In the United States, where legalization at the federal level is discussed, the two most important voices of both political currents, i.e. the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, they argued, at least implicitly, the “no” argument, publishing an excerpt of Alex Berenson's book at the beginning of the year, Tell Your Children: The Truth about Marijuana, Mental Illness, and Violence (Tell your children the truth about marijuana, mental illnesses and violence), dove the serious health and social problems resulting from the spread of joint are illustrated. Another publication should also be noted - we hope both will soon be translated into Italian - and that is the substantial volume, published in 2017 fromAmerican National Academy of Medicine, from the title The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids – The current state of evidence and reccomendations for research (The health effects of cannabis and cannabinoids – Current state of the evidence and recommendations for research), dove, in the opinion of the prof. benini, «you learn everything about cannabis».
The two studies collect enormous documentation in order to demonstrate how unfounded is the myth so widespread today about the "lightness" of certain drugs which, exactly like the "heavy" ones, «to change your mood, they act on the brain». It is true that sporadic use has moderate consequences, but it is also true that, if until the 1990s marijuana contained the 2% Of Thc, today it contains up to 25%. And the repercussions in medical terms are verifiable by the increased emergency hospitalizations due to mental confusion following intake.
However, an excerpt from the article in question deserves to be reported in full:
«Dal 2010, in countries where marijuana is liberalized, the number of deaths from opioid overdoses has increased. In the 2017 il 7.5% of the American population among the 18 and i 25 years he suffered from serious mental illnesses, double that of ten years earlier. Dal 2006, the number of hospitalizations for psychosis in the USA has increased in proportion to the increase in marijuana consumption. The most dramatic message of the Academy of Medicine publication is that the use of cannabis “increases the risk of schizophrenia and other psychoses in proportion to consumption”. Like all drugs, Marijuana is one of the epigenetic causes of dementia. Legalization is also deadly because it sends the fraudulent message that marijuana is harmless».
The truth is that even in this case, as with all the great ethical and bioethical issues of recent decades, politics has stopped looking at the truth, to choose the good, turning rather to the useful than, often and willingly, it is not synonymous with "good" but with its opposite...
