Birghton, 17 Dec – To the children of the schools in the municipality of Brighton, in England, during sex education lessons, will be taught that “all genders” can menstruate: new victory for supporters of transgender rights. Indeed, as reported by Telegraph, the Brighton Borough Council of Teachers & Hove approved this new rule, in an effort to combat the stigma around menstruation.
The Brighton Teachers Council has written a “report” which states: “Trans, Boys and men and 'non-binary' people can have periods.", adding that “menstruation must include all genders”. Disposal containers will be provided in all bathrooms for all children of all genders, from now on. The handbook drawn up by this council also recommends that "language and learning about menstruation includes all genders, the culture, faiths and sexual orientations” including “girls and women and others who menstruate”.
Brighton teachers & Hove have simultaneously released this statement: “Encouraging effective education about menstruation and puberty, we hope to reduce stigma and ensure that no child or young person feels ashamed of asking for menstruation products in or out of school if they need them. Our method recognizes the fact that some people who have periods are trans or 'non-binary'.". The same teachers council has also published a “Trans Inclusion Schools Toolkit”: a handbook to help teachers deal with gender identity sensitively.
This policy requires teachers to be respectful and inclusive of children who are questioning their gender, e recommends paying attention to the male or female pronoun "chosen" by these children, because not respecting their choices is essentially harassment. The toolkit also advises schools to adopt a non-gendered uniform so all children feel included.
