Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, 8 Jan – The evening of January 8th 1993 the mafia decided to silence him forever Beppe Alfano. The dynamics of this murder appeared unclear from the beginning. Let's see why. The Sicilian reporter was sitting in the driving seat of his Renault 9, pulled up to the right, in via Marconi (not far from his home) with the passenger side window down, the gearbox in neutral and the engine running. Giuseppe Aldo Felice Alfano, known as Beppe was born in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto on 4 November of 1945. As a young man he was active first in Ordine Nuovo and then in the Italian Social Movement. Political passion (understood as total dedication towards the polis) it will be the distinctive feature of its existence. He attended the faculty of economics and commerce, but after his father's death he abandoned his university studies. He moved to Cavedine in the province of Trento and here he began to do the job he would do throughout his life, that is, a technical education teacher.. He returned to Barcelona in 1976 and here he managed to combine political commitment in the ranks of the MSI with his passion for journalism. In fact, he collaborated with many local radio stations. In the following years he became the "journalistic engine" of two local television stations: Channel 10 and Tele Mediterranea. A few years later he began collaborating with the newspaper Sicily of Catania. All this without being a journalist, continuing to be a teacher and political activist. Even though he couldn't devote himself full time to journalism, he was a thoroughbred chronicler. Qualities which, however, were not recognized by the newspaper Sicily, who gave him five thousand lire for each piece.
Such a certain man could not remain indifferent to the mafia. Then for a Sicilian fascist, the mafiosi were gods partisans with caps. No one should forget that the boss Salvatore Lucania alias Lucky Luciano contributed to the fall of Fascism and the arrival of the Americans in Sicily. For this reason Alfano began to wage an unequal fight against the local bosses. Although the province of Messina was considered a province great (that is, not very smart and consequently not inclined to crime) Barcelona made the difference. The ruling clan was closely linked with Nitto Santapaola and therefore with i Corleonesi. Not only that, but in the same city, or rather in the neighboring municipality of Terme Vigliatore, there was another clan that competed with the people of Barcelona for control of the territory. Beppe Alfano, but, he wasn't satisfied with reporting on crime, how Giovanni Falcone adopted the technique of Follow the money, that is, following the money to frame the mafiosi. The themes on which his investigations focused were: the offenses committed in the management of Aias (the Milazzo disabled assistance association), illegalities in the municipality of Barcelona, the frauds of the citrus sector to the EU in the Tyrrhenian area of Messina. Furthermore, he seems to have discovered that the overlapping Nitto Santapaola was hidden right in his city. To move the lines, but, there weren't just the godparents. According to the MSI reporter, a Masonic-type brotherhood had been formed in his city (La Corda Frates) which united the exponents of the ruling class with the members of the Cupola.
In light of what has been said, It is difficult to establish the motive for this murder. However, the lesson that we must draw from this story does not pass through the courtrooms. Beppe Alfano is not a victim, on the contrary he is a fallen man. He chose to fight the mafia knowing he could be killed, he died standing while those around him preferred to survive on their knees. There's more: Alfano challenged his enemies in the streets of his city looking them in the face, he did not take refuge in an attic in New York. This is also why we must remember this man who, like Paolo Borsellino, with his blood he redeemed the honor of his land.
