The League stands against the Global Compact on migrants. The USA has already marched out, Austria, Poland and Hungary. Saltamartini: “Against uncontrolled entry”
In recent days several exponents of the centre-right they had invited the government, and in particular the League, to take a stand against the Global Compact on migrants, the international agreement on “right to migrate”.
Today the Carroccio accepted the request: the group leader in the Foreign Affairs Commission presented a resolution to explain “because our country, as other European states have already done, does not have to join the Global Compact”.

“No one can impose uncontrolled immigration on us”, attacks the group leader Paolo Formentini according to which the international agreement is nothing else than “yet another attempt at interference in national politics”. There are already several states that have announced their desire not to join the agreement. They range from the United States to Poland, passing through Austria, Hungary and Australia. Now the Bel Paese could also be added to the list.
“It seems absurd to us to give truly state competence to an unelected body that does not respond directly to citizens”, adds Formentini. “It is anachronistic and socially dangerous – continues – limit national sovereignty in the management of migratory flows. At the same time, it is false that the phenomenon of mass migration is positive and beneficial for everyone. We have seen what has happened in Italy in these years of false welcome desired by left-wing governments. We therefore need a clear distinction between refugees, for whom our doors are and will be open and economic migrants and illegal immigrants“.
The League's line is also reiterated by Barbara Saltamartini. For the Lega deputy and President of the Productive Activities Commission of the Chamber, the Northern League will not allow “entrances to anyone, not even under the umbrella of the UN through the Global Compact”. “At the same time – concludes the Northern League deputy – we will always be in favor of serious regulation of flows but we cannot grant everyone the right to emigrate, regardless of the reason for doing so. Nor are we and will we be inclined to lose our sovereignty any further. As is well known, we are for a safe welcome network, for those who actually have the right to it, and that is why we support humanitarian corridors. At the same time, but, we will continue to be against uncontrolled entry into our territory”.
