Edward Pentin is the Rome correspondent of National Catholic Register. A daily newspaper that generally comes defined as “liberal” and that, in any case, represents an important voice of American Catholicism. In this exclusive interview, Pentin analyzes, from his point of view and that of the Americans, the relationship between American Catholics and Pope Bergoglio.
Your newspaper was particularly attentive to the “Barros case”. How do you think the "management" of this matter was?
"Chaotic. The problem is the Pope's inconsistency in dealing with cases of abuse: on the one hand he has shown himself committed to implementing new structures to fight crime, but on the other hand he favored friends or friends of friends – cardinals, bishops and priests – who covered up abuse or committed abuse themselves. The case of Bishop Barros is just another example of a proven trend.".
Donald Trump and Catholics. The tycoon is a pro-life exponent. As currency, to date, the actions implemented by the president of the United States?
“He has been described as the most pro-life president in the history of the United States, based on what has been done so far. Including his reinstatement of Mexico City politics, his choice of Supreme Court Justice Gorsuch and his frequent speeches supporting the dignity of life and the unborn. His speech before this year's March for Life in Washington was unprecedented for a US president despite his clear respect and support for the unborn.".
What is the opinion of American Catholics on Bergoglio?
“Like everywhere, varia, but it can be safely said that those who seek to practice their faith and regularly receive the sacraments have serious reservations about Francis, although only some say this publicly – mainly because they are traditional Catholics and criticize publicly: the Pope is not considered just or prudent. Non-Catholics and those Catholics who hardly follow papal news, or who do not take faith and tradition seriously, they are generally much more favorable to this pontificate”.
The American Conference of Catholic Bishops it seems critical on Francis. Why?
“I'm not aware that they were critical, at least not openly".
How it was received in the United States the position of Cardinal Sean O'Malley south “Barros case”?
“Cardinal O'Malley's comments had full visibility; many felt his reaction was understandable for the reasons he explained.".
America looks positively at the doctrinal changes made by the Pope?
“It's safe to say that among social progressives the answer is yes; between conservatives and traditionalists, certainly not. The latter are particularly tired of the deception and lies resulting from this pontificate; they feel deceived, angry and frustrated about what is happening, and they see these doctrinal changes as ultimately weakening the moral teaching of the Church, despite the reassurances of the Pope and others that the doctrine would remain the same. They also see the Pope acting as the spokesperson for a teaching of little spiritual substance, and disorientate the faithful, apparently contradict the teaching of the past, for example on the admission of some divorced and remarried people to Holy Communion. This contrasts with progressives who are happy to see the Church dragged into the 21st century and adapted to whatever moral norms are seen as generally acceptable for today's world.".
What about this pontificate's approach to Islam?
"Many, although obviously not all, they feel it is too soft and unrealistic. They would like a more truthful approach that does not hold back from criticizing its violent roots and characteristics and clarifying that it is a false religion.".
The brief, within an upcoming conference 7 April, the figure of Cardinal Caffarra will be remembered. They say she will be present…
“It is not yet clear who will be present, although the hope is that Cardinal Joseph Zen will be present. Certainly the hope among the organizers is that the spirit of Cardinal Caffarra is there, helping to guide the progress. The conference was one of his last wishes aimed at healing the divisions that have been exacerbated during this pontificate.".
