No intention of adopting attitudes that lead to the voluntary interruption of treatment for terminally ill patients.
There will be no advert in favor of euthanasia. The position taken by Italian doctors is a clear one, gathered in National Federation of Medical Orders (Fnomceo). With a joint statement, specialists from all over the country have in fact declared that not be willing to favor or induce euthanasia for terminally ill patients, nor now, nor after the possible approval of a law in this regard, by Parliament.
“Il Code of ethics medical treatment prevents carrying out and/or encouraging acts aimed at causing the death of the patient. At the same time it requires the doctor to respect the patient's dignity by avoiding any form of therapeutic fury. Where the legislator deems it necessary to modify the art. 580 of the Criminal Code, and therefore to no longer consider the punishability of a doctor who facilitates the execution of suicide 'in any way', the rules established by the Code of Conduct remain valid and applicable".
The entry into force of new legislative regulations - according to what was also declared by Fnomceo - will require constant comparison and very careful scrutiny, not implying automatic changes in ethical discipline.
