The dictator who I carry inside me

Now the dictator is Salvini, or maybe Di Maio, actually better Casaleggio. Until six months ago the dictator was a Eurocrat or one of his local concessionaires, which also loom threateningly on the horizon.
Now the dictator is Salvini, or maybe Di Maio, actually better Casaleggio. Until six months ago the dictator was a Eurocrat or one of his local concessionaires, which also loom threateningly on the horizon. Anyone is in opposition, for many years now, denounces the imminent danger of a dictatorship in Italy. And he denounces it despite from '94 onwards, that is, from the advent of the second republic to today, every outgoing government has failed in the elections, in perfect alternation. Once upon a time he was a dictator in pectore Berlusconi, then a half-white coup ousted Berlusconi and dictatorship was the succession of governments without democratic legitimacy. From the opposition Grillo thundered against the dictatorship of Renzi who was in charge of all the wheels and many saw something of a tyrant in his bullying. Now the shadow of the dictator returns, also through the mouth of Berlusconi himself who denounces the illiberal regime of the grillini.
But for a lifetime the Left has been denouncing the danger of fascism and Nazism at the door, which is then the re-edition of the eternal cry of alarm of the lurking reaction that was used by the communist regimes to suppress dissidents. Anti-fascism has become a daily prayer that challenges ridicule and reality and serves to call for democratic "vigilance" against the ogre that will come.
We have become so accustomed to the denunciation of the incoming dictator that we now live peacefully with presumed dictatorships, present and future. But there is a peculiarity that makes the speech - already surreal in itself - even more absurd and grotesque: if a popular referendum was held with a lie detector, the dictatorship would win by a large majority. Democratically. Freely. Paradoxically. He is the animal I carry inside me, to quote Franco Battiato and Francesco Piccolo; in me, in te, in him, in them. The dictator.
They denounce the danger of a dictatorship, and they see it in the four corners of our democracy: among populists or oligarchists, between sovereignists or globalists; left, To the right, below and above. But there is an indecent desire for dictatorship among the people and not just today. It is the desire for quick decisions, cute, radicals. The desire to simplify and finally solve age-old problems, heal, reclaim, carry out public works in a short time, face the eurarchs above and the migrants below, but also the corrupt inside and the scoundrels outside. A wish to 360 degrees, indeed to 370 to put it with the Grillina scientist. Quick decisions are needed, effective, cute, and instead they get bogged down in crossed vetoes, in downward compromises, in the opposing forces that neutralize each other producing a zero sum. The result is inertia or at most trifles, the little mouse, after announcing the mountain. Or we can postpone it until tomorrow, not out of a sense of responsibility but out of fear of losing one's role today. Better to float. It happened in the first republic, then in the second, and it still happens in the so-called third republic with the contract without alliance between Grillini and Northern League members who pull in opposite directions. And they unite only in the face of the Enemy who wants to expropriate them of the mandate received.
On the other hand, in the Putin world, Trump, Xi, Erdogan, Bolsonaro and gradually going down, suggest that a decision maker, if not a dictator, an autocrat, it is needed to govern chaos. Maybe in time, like the dictators of the Roman era, with limited mandate and control.
The dictatorship of virtues spreads, of Jacobin memory, among the grillini, with their desire to wipe out ruling classes, the allergic press, the established powers and all those suspected of being Corrupt. But the dictatorship of political correctness spreads on the left, with their arrogance and their contempt for the common people and their vote; a power that straightens the people and re-educates them with precepts, prescriptions and proscriptions. The desire of the Strong Man on the right spreads, with Salvini and beyond, someone who can make a country that doesn't work work, secure it and decide without eternal mediation.
And it meanders, there's no point in hiding it, also among technicians and eurotutors, that they would like countries to be protected and slapped, in a techno-financial regime where voting doesn't count, the dogma is the Euro, the original sin is the sovereign debt, heaven is the Balanced Budget.
However, the dictator's desire is also in the majority among ordinary citizens and even abstentionists, that is, among people without license plates and without belonging, who doesn't go to vote due to general no-confidence. But with these premises because then the Dictatorship remains only a frustrated desire, a kind of Beckettian Godot, an evocation of Buzzati's Tartars? Because the dictatorship I want is not the one you want. The neighbor's dictatorship is increasingly ugly. It's about how to do it, who to entrust it to, which we then split up. In the end we don't loudly ask for dictatorship not only because we are ashamed of it or we want someone else to say it first, and then if there are no hostile reactions, we join. But why does the dictatorship of others always arrive, never what we would like. And there is such a fear that it will become a dictatorship against our interests, our comforts, that in the end we fall back on inconclusive democracy, where the damages are vast and insured but the errors, albeit serious and multiple, they are more spread and are not irreparable…
The trouble with invoked or feared dictators is that you wait for them on one side, and instead they always come out from the opposite side. Behind you.
