Everyone repeats: it is the war of the people against the elites, the common people against the powerful, here is populism, here is the sovereignism that spreads everywhere. Yet an important aspect is overlooked, decisive, perhaps even more important and more decisive than the other, which clearly emerges in political choices, electoral and democratic elections in the United States and Brazil, of Russia and the Philippines, of Hungary and the countries of the Visegrad area, of Japan, of India and even Turkey: the widespread demand for order and leaders that they are the guarantors. Trump and Bolsonaro, Putin is Duterte, Orban e Duda, Erdogan, Abe and Modi were voted for or gather consensus because compared to their progressive antagonists they guarantee or promise Order. And in Italy? Salvini sensed that the challenge of the present/future is being played out on the theme of the Order and for this reason he chose the Ministry of the Interior for himself, He sports the uniforms of the police forces and publishes posters with his image under the writing Dio, homeland and family. And for this reason his approval has doubled in just a few months and today he leads the polls. After all, at the League demonstration in Piazza del Popolo in Rome, last 8 December, the people's applause began precisely on those themes that concerned Christian civilisation, love of country and defense of the family. And the Battisti case and the other fugitive terrorists, crime arrests, the stop to wild immigration are variations on the theme of order.
It is not the old authoritarian passion for police regimes, it is not the last residue of a reactionary impulse that comes from the past, but something more radical and more global that arises in the present: it is the popular demand for protection from world disorder, from an overly open society, too liquid, without rules or fixed points. To avoid falling into chaos, order is requested. Starting with the poorest and most defenseless classes.
From those who govern we expect social justice even before that, efficiency and reforms, protection from Chaos and disorientation. Public order, first of all, to stop crime and give people security in their homes, in the streets of their city, in public places. But also Civil order, to stem illegal migratory flows, drug trafficking or to stop the barbarism rising from the bowels of society. And Order to put life back in order, establish norms and canons that require re-establishing a measure in private life, in public life and in the moral life of peoples. Never before has that motto reappeared which seemed to belong to the distant past: Dio, homeland and family. Almost all the leaders mentioned above, who in a more credible way, some less, they refer to those principles and want to be their guarantors and bearers.
The request for order arises from a somewhat brutal simplification, sometimes it's a stretch, se volete, but it is also the need to put order and give meaning to personal life, social and state of peoples. Right, The use of such fundamental and lofty principles in the daily sphere creates a bit of embarrassment, in the political struggle and in the search for electoral consensus. Certain biographies, certain behaviors, they clash with the declamation of those principles. But behind the demagogic use and abuse, opportunistic, instrumentality that can exist in those who brandish such demanding principles, there is some truth, profound and essential which intercepts a fundamental need of peoples and individual citizens and which demands to be safeguarded.
And not only that. Today more than yesterday we feel that the need for order is not in antithesis to social justice, social cohesion, the defense of the rights of the weakest, but it is instead the preliminary condition. Only in order is it possible to have effective social policies, achieve great feats, strengthen the community bond, support the weakest, protect the lower classes, give security.
Order is the preliminary instance of good government, as freedom is in the voting choice of a good democracy.
In the seventies, a battle of slogans was fought over the issue of order Almirante's national right which called for "freedom within order" and the DC which instead opposed "order within freedom". Senseless dispute because neither freedom nor order can be included in each other, but every good political government must balance order and freedom, because one is the limit and measure of the other. But on the front of conformism, ranging from liberals to communists, translates as the word always: it's fascism.
In the end, the theme of the Order, it is not "against Europe", if anything it is against disorientation, the chaos of globalization. In short, populism is not simply the revenge of ordinary people against the oligarchies of power, but it is a request for order which is the hard core of sovereignism. Order is a fundamental good and a general necessity, not an ugly, ferocious word.
