The parties sovereignists they already decide the fate of the European Union. And one hundred days from the European elections, what it is it is certain that these movements already have a fundamental role in the political landscape of the Old Continent. While waiting for an electoral round which now seems clear that it will represent the certification of a takeover of these parties. Which now represent a reality rooted in the institutional framework of the continent.
European elections which will certainly expand a role that these parties already have. As he wrote The Sun 24 Ore, “I am now 11 i governments of the European Union supported by a majority which includes sovereignist movements, anti-system or simply eurosceptics”. After Italy, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Greece is Romania, Latvia also joins the list of governments supported by non-traditional forces. The new executive, guided by Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš, in fact, it is supported by five parties, among which is the Kpv Lv, a strongly Eurocritical acronym.
With these promises, it is now clear that sovereignist parties have already obtained a fundamental part in the decision-making process of the European Union. And it also demonstrates the fact that these movements are not all united in one large electoral bloc, but they are spread across four parties currently present in the European Parliament. Parties critical of the current European Union system are in fact present in the European People's Party (where the Fidesz di Viktor Orbán or Sebastian Kurz himself), the Europe of Nations and Freedoms (where they are League e National Gathering), the conservators of the Ecr, dominated by the Polish Pis, and the Europe of freedom and direct democracy, dove, in addition to the Movement 5 position, above all there is theAlternative for Germany.
In fact, what is clear to us from this composition is that when we talk about sovereignism in Europe it is not accurate to talk about “black wave”. But of a much broader scale that includes various parties, various formations and also different facets of this criticism of the European Union. With the certainty that, between European parties in which they are present and the governments they lead or whose coalition they are part of, in fact sovereignists are now necessary interlocutors for any future of Europe.
The influence of the sovereignists can already be seen on the political agendas of the various EU executives. By now everyone is forced to admit that these movements represent a large portion of their electorate. And also in countries led by the standard-bearers of Europeanism (in the first place Francia e Germania), leaders begin to have to bend to the will of the people, showing radical changes in policies that have unleashed the sense of revenge of these popular movements. Angela Merkel, after years of welcome unbridled, had to admit that it had failed in terms of integrating immigrants. While Emmanuel Macron, champion of the European elites and pro-Europeans, he had to make a mea culpa several times in front of a ration that exploded in the wrath of the yellow vests.
The example of these two leaders is indicative of how much they weigh, to date, sovereignist demands. And the next European elections could provide these same movements with a specific weight of absolute importance. Especially in the appointments of the next EU leaders. Berlin and Paris seem intent on dividing up the seats that matter. But that doesn't mean the next one European Parliament let Macron and Merkel play their game. Especially because from the center to the radical right there is a common platform that unites these movements. And that could, for example, make the European People's Party lean towards the right, shifting the center of gravity of the moderates towards a unity of purpose with the sovereignists.
In any case, the possibility that the sovereignist parties form a compact and transversal bloc that has a heavy impact on the future of the European institutions is a topic that worries the leaders in Brussels. Governments and parties critical of the EU could join forces to block the work of Commission and other bodies on topics of particular importance starting from foreign policy up to migration policy and freedom of movement. And they could force moderate parties, liberals and social democrats to bend to the will of these parties. Or expect a real one immobility. After all, the polls speak clearly: one in four Europeans now votes for parties that are superficially labeled as "populist".
