On May 8th 1876 the construction of the Sanctuary of Pompeii began, a place dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary or more simply Madonna of Pompeii. Millions of faithful, 4 according to the calculations, they flock every year from all over the world to request Mary's intercession in this place and therefore obtain her grace by offering prayers and money.
The painting
The fulcrum of this pilgrimage is the painting depicting the Madonna. The famous supplication to the Virgin of the Rosary was written by Blessed Bartolo Longo in 1883 and is recited on two days a year: May 8th which commemorates the first stone of the Sanctuary in Pompeii, and therefore on the first Sunday of October, day on which the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated. Today we offer you a short but equally powerful supplication that you can recite together.
Small supplication to the Madonna of Pompeii Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary
Virgin of the Holy Rosary, Mother of the Redeemer, woman of our land raised above the heavens, humble servant of the Lord proclaimed Queen of the world, from the depths of our miseries we turn to You.
With the trust of children we look at your sweetest face. Crowned with twelve stars, you bring us to the mystery of the Father, you shine with the Holy Spirit, you give us your divine Child, Jesus, our hope, only salvation of the world.
By handing us your Rosary you invite us to gaze upon His face. you open your heart to us, abyss of joy and pain, of light and glory, mystery of the son of God, made man for us. At your feet in the footsteps of the Saints we feel like God's family. Mother and model of the Church, you are a safe guide and support. Make us one heart and one soul, strong people on their way towards the homeland of heaven.
We hand over our miseries to you, the many roads of hatred and blood, the thousand ancient and new forms of poverty and above all our sin. We rely on you, Mother of Mercy: obtain for us God's forgiveness, help us build a world after your heart. O blessed Rosary of Mary, sweet chain that ties us to God, chain of love that makes us brothers, we will never leave you again. In our hands you will be a weapon of peace and forgiveness, star of our journey.
And the kiss to you with the last breath will immerse us in a wave of light,
in the vision of the beloved Mother and the divine Son, longing and joy of our heart with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
