In May we vote for the renewal of the European Parliament. Salvini has recently toned down the controversy against the EU and the radical criticism of the euro from five years ago, today there is not much left, actually nothing. Right, when you are in government you need to be cautious and especially in this phase of discussion with the European Commission it is better to avoid talking about the single currency so as not to give the mainstream the excuse of a possible surge in the spread.
For the European elections, however, Salvini should not campaign as deputy prime minister or minister, but rather as the leader of the political party that could even establish itself as the country's main force. And regarding the European elections we want to ask the question: Salvini has definitively decided to abandon the issue of Italy's exit from the euro, leaving the fight for the recovery of monetary sovereignty to the Brothers of Italy, CasaPound and various sovereignists on the verge of a nervous breakdown? Or is it just a mere and temporary tactical retreat?
One point deserves to be highlighted. In our house Salvini is bound by the government contract with the M5S which, effectively, it does not foresee exit from the single currency. Something we are reminded of almost every day now. But for the European elections this constraint does not apply and Salvini perhaps should not forget that his political fortune began precisely with the political battle against the euro in the European political elections of 2014.
The League was sliding down a dangerous slippery slope and the climb began precisely with those elections and with the criticism of the single currency. Since then Matteo has always maintained that the State needs to control its currency and in some television programs he even went so far as to declare that "leaving the euro is a moral duty".
Even for these Eurosceptic positions his consensus reached 17% to the policies of 4 March. Now though, always in some statements, Salvini went so far as to argue that it is not in the League's programme (more) the exit from the euro and to conclude that «we have the euro in our pocket and we will keep the euro». It is true that Salvini plays on the ambiguity of the program of the League and the center-right and not of the program that the League alone presented to the voters, and precisely for this reason I would like to recall here the political program of the League drawn up in January this year in view of the national political elections. Well, that program explicitly provides (p. 9 of the official document) the restoration of sovereignty in various aspects and in first place is the recovery of "monetary and economic sovereignty".
This point - so it was thought - had to be sacrificed to create a government alliance with the Five Star Movement. But based on Salvini's recent statements it seems that the League has evolved, from my point of view an involution, and that the great theme also emerged from the political program of the League, on which Libero it implied so much, of leaving the euro.
Captain think again, nothing is lost, until all is lost.
