I have already had the opportunity to explain that attitude, typically Christian, of Russian President Vladimir Putin to turn the other cheek to Western provocations is a strategy intended to convince Europe that Russia is reasonable while Washington is not, and that Russia is not a threat to the interests and sovereignty of Europe, while Washington is. Appeasing Israel and withdrawing from the Iranian multinational nuclear non-proliferation agreement, American President Donald Trump may have contributed to the success of Putin's strategy.
The three largest European vassal states of Washington, Great Britain, France and Germany opposed Trump's unilateral action. Trump believes that the multinational treaty depends only on Washington. If Washington were to renounce the agreement, this would represent the end of the agreement itself. The will of the other signatories does not matter. Consequentially, Trump wants to reintroduce pre-existing sanctions on trade with Iran and impose additional ones, new sanctions. If Great Britain, France and Germany continued to honor the commercial contracts stipulated with Iran, then Washington would also sanction its own vassal states and ban English companies, French and German to operate in the United States. Washington obviously believes that the profits that Europeans have in the United States exceed those that can be obtained in Iran and thinks that [the Europeans] they will adapt to Washington's decisions, as well as, from vassal states, they have already done so in the past. General Mattis told the US Senate Armed Services Committee that he believes a military confrontation between Israel and Iran in Syria is increasingly likely: “I can see how it might start, but I'm not sure when or where“. This shouldn't be surprising. Anyone peeking through the membrane of the Western bubble, can see the main dynamics “bridging and strengthening” such that they inexorably close in on Israel. It becomes “inexorable”: not so much because the states of the Middle East desire war (they don't want it); but because Israel feels culturally forced to bind itself to President Trump and his team of extremists, placing itself as the first collaborator in the United States' "war" to repel China, Russia, Iran and make their commercial project an ineffective and weakened entity. The belligerent rhetoric of Pompeo and Bolton may seem like an intoxicating elixir to some Israelis; but the Middle East is simply not the place to collaborate in this new US hybrid "war" against the new emerging dynamics. A few days after the Western missile raid in Syria, it appears increasingly clear that it has not undermined the agreement between Trump and Putin to manage the spheres of influence in the troubled Middle Eastern country. What Russia and the United States have in common is the need to reaffirm their primacy on the international level, eroded in recent decades, but to do so in a way that manages differences, according to the agreement signed at the G20 in Hamburg, in July 2017.
Each of the two powers follows its own "national interests". The synthesis National Defense Strategy 2018 signed by US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, makes it clear that the primary national security concern of the United States is no longer terrorism, but the strategic competition between states. And between Russia and China, the two main actors, with the United States, on international theatre, Trump considers China his most formidable opponent and is seeking an agreement with Putin, to prevent the formation of an anti-American Russian-Chinese alliance.
