Donald Trump gives new satisfaction to American pro-lifers. The White House has in fact put forward one proposal to modify theAffordable Care Act (better known as Obamacare), in order to finally protect conscientious objection to abortion.
The critical issue is in the legislation issued in 2016, last year of the Obama administration, by the Department of Health and Human Services, which he branded as “sexual discrimination” against women, the refusal of medical personnel to terminate a pregnancy.
One year after the issue of that rule, a Texas court raised doubts about its illegality. The applicants were a Catholic hospital and an association of Christian doctors, claiming that the measure went against their religious beliefs. The Trump administration's intervention would thus prevent a legal dispute, definitively and clearly re-establishing freedom of conscience.
«When Congress banned sex discrimination, he did so based on the simple definition of the term, so we are complying with our regulations», said Roger Severino, director of the civil rights section of the Department of Health and Human Services. «The American people want vigorous protection of civil rights and loyalty to the laws passed by their representatives». The provision for reviewing theObamacare should be approved by 60 days. According to Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life association Susan B. Anthony List, this could affect the application of the new laws of the states of New York and Vermont, which allow abortion up to the ninth month.
«Under the previous administration, federal law was reinterpreted to define abortion as a civil right», ha observato Dannenfelser, underlining that the reform the Trump administration is working on will serve in particular to «protect pro-life institutions and healthcare workers like Cathy De Carlo, who entered the medical profession to save lives but was then forced to participate in abortions, at the cost of losing my profession». In thanking President Trump and the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar, Dannenfelser urged Congress to do its part in protecting conscientious objection.
Favorable opinions were also expressed by Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council, according to which an Obama-era injustice is being put to an end, which forces health workers to carry out activities that «they essentially violate their consciences». The ongoing review will allow the «Obamacare is not used to convey pro-abortion policies».
Anche Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, thanked the administration, remembering that «Pregnancy is not a disease that can be cured by abortion. Our policy», he added, «should not have a pro-abortion bias, because mothers and pregnant women deserve support and assistance, not to be pressured to end the child's life».
