Cesare Battisti, fugitive in Brazil and awaiting extradition, he is not just a multiple murderer who escaped from Italian prisons in 1981 with two life sentences under his belt.
Battisti is first and foremost the flag of the diehards of a monstrous season, that of the political terrorism that bloodied Italy in the seventies and eighties. Not just comrades in arms who - more or less - have somehow paid their dues with justice. Battisti - who was more of a criminal than a terrorist - is above all the flag of intellectuals, journalists and politicians nostalgic for that crazy revolutionary dream even though they all ended up well placed in democracies, in the boards of directors and in the living rooms that at the time they intended to demolish with words and bullets.

Many of the signatories of the pro-Baptist appeals (Saviano is also there, then regretted it, and the inevitable Vauro) they are the same ones who today hunt for fascist writings on monuments but who want to "close it there" about the Years of Lead despite the four hundred deaths killed (four of them, as said, from his friend Battisti). First they hid under the protective wing in every sense – physical, cultural and political – of the «Mitterrand doctrine», that is, the asylum that socialist France recognized for political criminals until the beginning of the 2000s. Then, protection lost, they have moved on to mutual assistance and the demand for oblivion: forget us, or rather forget the innocent blood that we and our theories have shed liberally.
Bringing back - or better it would be to finally bring - Battisti back to prison means remembering and certifying that we are talking about criminal associations, of ruthless murderers and not of heroes or martyrs of the proletariat, much less persecuted intellectuals. This is why Italy cannot miss the opportunity to extradite Battisti. We talk about him, but that sentence must be carried out to nail the whole world to its responsibilities, golden today, who has protected him over the years, helped and unfortunately even exalted.
