The Austrian Interior Ministry has presented a series of measures to discourage the arrival of migrants. A, in particular, it's causing discussion: the possibility of preventive imprisonment, and by administrative decision, asylum seekers deemed dangerous.
This tightening of asylum policy is also inspired by a bloody incident, which occurred not far from the Swiss borders. A Dornbirn, last 6 February, a 34-year-old Turkish man killed a senior social office official.
The victim, ten years earlier, had decided to expel the young Turk from Austria because he had committed some crimes. At the beginning 2019, but, the attacker returned to the country illegally and requested asylum, getting to stay.
“In the European directives on reception in the field of asylum”, observes Austrian Interior Minister Herbert Kickl regarding the controversial preventive measure, “this imprisonment is contemplated if it serves national security and the defense of public order”.
However, an amendment to the Constitution is needed, and therefore a qualified majority in Parliament for which the support of other parties is necessary. Which will be difficult to achieve, since in the plans of Vienna, preventive detention would be decided not by a judge, but by officials.
