One hundred and seventeen immigrants, many women and children, deaths drowned in an attempt to reach the Italian coast on rubber dinghies are very bad news.
It is true that the relationship between arrivals and victims, in the last five years, has remained almost constant, approximately two deaths for every hundred arrivals. Which means that the only way to save human lives is to limit departures from the African coasts by any means because, in absolute number, The more immigrants we welcome, the more they die during the crossings. Two out of a hundred, as mentioned, would not arrive in Italy alive regardless of the political line.
Closing the ports to the organizations that acted as taxis and entrusting the rescue operations to the Libyan navy therefore saved – discouraging and blocking departures – thousands of people from drowning, not the opposite, as claimed by the many nostalgics of pre-Minniti and pre-Salvini feel-good politics, which in recent years has produced the unenviable record of fifteen thousand deaths.
The dinghies, cause of yesterday's tragedy, they have unfortunately escaped the network of controls set up for our protection but above all theirs, also an accomplice – as reported by Salvini – a resumption of patrolling activity off the Libyan coast by NGO ships which in doing so encourage smugglers to try the adventure for a few miles, assured of easy transhipment.
Mourning the dead is a duty no less important than that of preventing similar tragedies from happening as frequently as in the past.
