Major Catechism of Saint Pius, The sixtieth of the fiftieth
(In the 2019: 17 February, 24 February e 3 March)
29 D. Which under the Sundays which are called Septuagesima, the sixtieth out of the fiftieth?
R. They are called Septuagesima Sundays, sexagesima and quinquagesima the seventh, sixth and fifth Sunday before that of Passione.
30 D. Why does the Church leave out the Alleluia in the divine offices from Septuagesima Sunday to Holy Saturday?, and uses purple vestments?
R. From Septuagesima Sunday to Holy Saturday, the Church leaves out the Alleluia in the divine offices, which is a voice of joy, and uses purple vestments, which is the color of sadness, to distance the faithful from the vain joys of the world with these signs of sadness and to inspire them with the spirit of penance.
31 D. What things does the Church propose for us to consider in the divine offices of the weeks of septuagesima, the sixtieth out of the fiftieth?
R. In the divine offices of the week of Septuagesima the Church represents to us the fall of our ancestors, and their just punishment; in those of the sexagesima week it represents the universal flood sent by God to punish sinners; then in the first three days of the quinquagesima week it represents the vocation of Abraham, and the reward given by God to his obedience and faith.
32 D. Where does that come from?, despite the intentions of the Church, in the time of septuagesima, the sixtieth out of the fiftieth, more than anywhere else, we see a lot of disorders among some Christians?
R. In this time more than in any other, we see so much disorder among some Christians due to the malice of the devil, who wanted to go against the plans of the Church, makes his greatest efforts to induce Christians to live according to the dictates of the world and the flesh.
33 D. What must we do to conform to the plans of the Church during carnival time?
R. To conform to the plans of the Church during carnival time we must stay away from dangerous shows and entertainment, and attend to prayer and mortification with greater diligence, making some extraordinary visits to the Blessed Sacrament, especially when it is exposed to public adoration; and this to remedy many disorders, with whom God is offended at this time.
34 D. If there was a need to be at some dangerous carnival fun, what should be done?
R. Who by necessity found himself at some dangerous carnival entertainment, he must first implore the help of divine grace to avoid every sin; then go there with great modesty and restraint, and after, gather the spirit by considering some maxims of the gospel.
