Their self-criticism excludes the presupposition of any serious bath of humility: listen. Listen to others, listen to who won and who decreed the victory of the populists and sovereignists, listen to people, listen to those who already before the collapse explained the reasons for the change underway. Nope. The others don't exist, they have no right to speak, they are plebs, or fascist, reactionaries, sovereignists or their accomplices. The Democratic Party did the same thing.
But all this presumption – that their lay Pope defines it in an equally presumptuous way as “albagia” (Eugenio Scalfari dixit of himself, with capital Self) so as not to confuse it with vulgar arrogance – explains the collapse of the elite much more than one might imagine.
Indeed, what can you reproach the elites for?, the fact of existing and therefore of betraying democracy, that is, the self-government of the people? Ma well, this is the childish scheme, simil-rousseauviano, of those who believe in the fairy tale of direct democracy. There has always been an elite government, There are no known countries or political systems in which the governed coincide with the governors, not even in rotation, and everything is decided by referendum and plebiscite, even economic maneuvers are made on the balcony and then signed in the square between flags, hugs and tric-trac.
The real problem, the disease of the system, it's that the elites were not seen on the field, in the plural, competing with each other, as befits a true democracy, but a single oligarchy, a compact and uniform although branched power block.
Elite theorists, From Fly to Pareto, they talked about the circulation of elites, for them history is a cemetery of aristocracies; it is the minorities that govern, but they are competing minorities, that are renewed.
Here, however, the constipation of the elite occurred. Or if you prefer a less cacophonous metaphor, the arteriosclerosis of the elite, the hardening of the arteries which did not allow their fluid circulation. Thrombi are formed in the blood and trombones in society. And they stop the flow. That's where the ruling class has closed itself in, becoming only the ruling class, and upper caste.
There was no circulation, there was no competition between divergent elites, and there was no selective filter to allow turnover through meritocracy. The social elevator has stopped, access to the capable and deserving has been closed. The elites were accessed only by co-optation, by affiliation to the elite dome, for conformity of ideas, method, languages ​​and idolatries.
But to have circulation, selection, competition, you have to admit that there is not just one Model, a way of development, a single political code, cultural and ideal. You have to accept differences and true antagonism.
And instead those who did not comply with those precepts, it was outlawed, out of system, he placed himself from time to time outside of modernity, from democracy, from Europe and in some cases even outside humanity. Then they don't explain why hatred has become a widespread social fact. But denying any citizenship to different ideas, to different political and cultural models, reducing everything to fascism and the like, and above all by denying even the existence of those who thought differently because those who disagreed could not have thought, they have in fact endorsed their being a Single and Closed Block, which self-reproduces.
Unlike them, For example, I read Ezio Mauro and Alessandro Baricco, Michele Serra and Ilvo Diamanti, Eugenio Scalfari and their other cultural signatures, and I generally appreciate its intellectual quality. I criticize them, I argue. For them instead, anyone who doesn't think like them is either a beast or doesn't exist. Then they can't explain why in the end they only talk to each other and to themselves, with capital se, forgetting the world. Who in the end willingly does without them, or turns against them.
