This, at least, is the intention of the Slovakian MEP Miroslav Mikolasik del Ppe, who would like to include an amendment denouncing the practice of surrogacy within the Annual report on human rights and democracy in the world, signed by MEP Petras Austrevicius, which the European Parliament is expected to approve in plenary today.
Specifically, Mikolasik's amendment commits the European Parliament to reiterate «his condemnation of the practice of surrogacy, which undermines the human dignity of women since their bodies and reproductive functions are used as commodities». A clear and very clear commitment, so, which would certainly improve one Annual report on human rights which – as often happens – presents passages that can be shared, although often too generic, in terms of the protection of human rights and dignity, touching on delicate topics such as freedom of expression and religion, the protection of minorities, democratic guarantees, the situation of women and minors.
Despite the Slovakian politician of Ppe has collected the 76 signatures necessary to file the amendment, the well-informed, however, highlight how such an act, with the current political balance, unfortunately has little chance of success. However, it is an attempt that must be made, also because the amendment in question, upon closer inspection, it simply repeats the text of the paragraph 115 from the Human rights report of December 2015. Already three years ago, Indeed, the European Parliament was confronted with one Relation prepared by the popular Romanian Cristian Dan Preda in which he reiterated a clear stop to the rented womb what practice reduces women, her womb and children to pure goods, with the exploitation especially of vulnerable women in developing countries.
Well, judging by what has happened since that 17 December 2015 to date, with surrogacy increasingly promoted also thanks to exceptional testimonials - just think, on everyone, to the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo - it is clear that a new stance against this practice would be decidedly useful. Because of this, although as mentioned it is unfortunately not simple, it is to be hoped that Mr Mikolasik's initiative will be successful. Not only because of the intrinsic injustice of the rented womb, but also because it seems to be at a decisive turning point on an international level on this front.
Indeed, if on the one hand the “gestation for others", as it is euphemistically called by its promoters, overall, it records a global market that is unfortunately continually expanding, on the other, the critical voices against what is increasingly perceived as abuse and commodification - just think, to stay in Italy, net Archlesbian opposition against this practice – there is no shortage. Here it is then all political institutions find themselves almost facing a point of no return, with the option to allow or stop, with a position, the spread of a new frontier of slavery otherwise destined to spread. Hence the need for acts like the one proposed by Mikolasik.
Because every additional day that passes without a clear condemnation of the rented womb marks, in fact, an increase in the difficulty of opposing a practice that – thanks to i mass media, on this side as on others that are quite unbalanced from a progressive perspective - is starting to be substantially accepted by growing sectors of public opinion. And this, in light of what has been said so far, appears to be something doubly unacceptable.
