The day before obtaining the confidence of the Hungarian parliament for the third time in a row, Viktor Orban stated that “the new government's priority will be to preserve national security and Hungary's Christian identity”.
These words come after those of last Friday when in a radio interview Orban underlined how “his executive will continue to work on building an old-fashioned Christian democracy, rooted in European traditions, we believe in the importance of the nation and in Hungary there is no space for any type of supranational activity”.
A further characteristic of previous Orban governments was that of a growing contrast with the world of pro-migrant NGOs. If continuity in this sense were to occur, one of the first laws to be passed could be the so-called 'Anti-Soros' law, guilty, according to his accusers, to support the massive arrival of groups of non-EU migrants on European territory through strong economic support to the NGOs themselves.
Civil society groups are reportedly preparing to suffer a very serious crackdown after the first anti-NGO law of 2017. The new measure would aim to hit with a taxation of 25% financing coming from abroad and would make the continuation of activities in Hungarian territory subject to obtaining a security authorization issued by the Ministry of the Interior. Furthermore, it would also involve those organizations that deal with simple information or awareness-raising activities.
