Benedict XVI: I didn't write about "mission" to the Jews
The Pope Emeritus intervenes publicly on Herder Korrespondenz to contest an article by the German theologian Michael Böhnke which criticized his previous contribution on Communio
VATICAN CITY – Not "mission" to the Jews but "dialogue" with the Jews: Benedict XVI appears in public again with a letter - "correction" - sent to the German Catholic magazine Herder Korrespondenz aimed at refuting a September article in which the Wuppertal theologian Michael Böhnke criticized a writing by the Pope Emeritus regarding the relationship between Jews and Christians which appeared this summer in the magazine Communio .

The accusations contained in Böhnke's article are "grotesque nonsense and have nothing to do with what I said about it", writes the 91-year-old Pope Emeritus in the message. «This is why I reject your article as an absolutely false insinuation».
On the merits of one of the issues addressed by Böhnke, the question of the "mission" to the Jews, that is, the hypothesis of announcing the Gospel to the Jews, It is true, writes Benedict XVI, that Christ sent his disciples on mission to all peoples and all cultures and therefore "the mandate of the mission is universal - with one exception: the mission to the Jews was not foreseen and was not necessary simply because it was only them, among all peoples, they knew the 'unknown God'". As for Israel, Therefore, what counts is not the mission but the dialogue on the understanding of Jesus of Nazareth, that is, if he is “the Son of God, he Logos», expected – according to the promises made to his own people – by Israel and, unconsciously, from all humanity. Resuming this dialogue is "the task that the present hour poses for us".
Judaism and Christianity are "two ways of interpreting the Scriptures", writes the Pope Emeritus. For Christians, the promises made to Israel are the hope of the Church and "those who stick to them are absolutely not questioning the foundations of Jewish-Christian dialogue".
Benedict XVI, who had already intervened in the discussion raised by his article last summer by writing to the chief rabbi of Vienna, Arie Folger, signs his "correction", which will be published in the December issue of Herder Korrespondenz, «Joseph Ratzinger-Benedetto XVI».
In the Document published in 2015 by the Holy See Commission for religious relations with Judaism, we read in paragraph six: «It is easy to understand that the so-called 'mission aimed at the Jews' is a very thorny and sensitive issue for the Jews, so long as, in their eyes, it concerns the very existence of the Jewish people. Even for Christians it is a delicate topic, since they consider the universal salvific role of Jesus Christ and the consequent universal mission of the Church to be of fundamental importance. The Church must therefore understand the evangelization aimed at the Jews, who believe in the one God, in a different way than that directed at those who belong to other religions or have other worldviews. This concretely means that the Catholic Church does not conduct or encourage any institutional mission aimed specifically at Jews. Without prejudice to this refusal - on principle- of an institutional mission directed to the Jews, Christians are called to bear witness to their faith in Jesus Christ even before the Jews; however, they must do so with humility and sensitivity, recognizing that the Jews are bearers of the Word of God and keeping in mind the great tragedy of the Shoah".

  • slurp, slurp, sluuuurp ! that's how they commented, with written cartoons, you lick them to others, when they shouldn't have been done…So unfortunately we now see these “slurp” ai “older brothers” Jews. Brothers “larger” of what ? They were and are the first persecutors of Christians , with Islamic manpower, everywhere in the world and in particular in the Middle East where ISIS was invented to devastate the lands where the Christian presence was the oldest ! They die, Then, I prefer to remain silent so as not to return to concepts that have already been widely debated !

  • On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Our Age, the Commission for religious relations with Judaism has drawn up a document entitled:
” Because God's gifts and calling are irrevocable”.
You can read about it among other things:Originally, the Holy Pope John XXIII had suggested that the Council promulgate a “Treatise on the Jews”, but in the end the decision to take into consideration prevailed, in OUR AGE, all world religions.
The FOCUS of the conciliar declaration…….
it is however his fourth article, which FOCUSES ON THE NEW THEOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JUDAISM.
In that sense, THE RELATIONSHIP WITH JUDAISM can be considered as the CATALYST to define the relationship of the Catholic Church with other world religions.
