Vatican, Bergoglio and the most drastic of challenges: "Aprite una moschea a San Pietro"

Jerusalem open to the worship of Islamic and Christian faithful? Then Bergoglio agreed to build a synagogue and a mosque within the Vatican walls, next to St. Peter's.
It didn't go down well with many Jews, including important Italian rabbis, l’ joint appeal launched a week ago by the Pope in Morocco, together with King Mohammed VI. In that statement we read: «We believe it is important to preserve the Holy City of Jerusalem/Al Qods Acharif as the common heritage of the people’ humanity and above all for the faithful of the three monotheistic religions.
(…) We hope, consequentially, that full freedom of access to the faithful of the three monotheistic religions and the right of each to exercise their own worship there are guaranteed in the Holy City".
An article appeared on Moked, the portal of’ Union of Italian Jewish communities, collects the reactions to this initiative of the pontiff, and most of them are decidedly negative.
Like that of Giuseppe Momigliano, chief rabbi of Genoa. Israel, remember the religious, «It's there’ only country that, in Middle East, protects its Christian citizens. And in these years, towards every religious community, ensured maximum availability and collaboration. Yet all this is not apparent in the declaration". The text of’ appeal signed by Francis and Mohammed VI, complains Momigliano, «it has a more political flavor than religious» and demonstrates that «the Church has no faith in’ authority of the State of Israel as guarantor of the religious freedoms of all". The result is that «there will inevitably be some repercussions. In fact, at the level of interreligious relations, such assumptions fuel a climate of coldness.".
L’ academic Sergio Della Pergola, one of the leading experts on Jewish demography and a reference figure for the community of Italians living in Israel, launches his provocation: «Since Jerusalem belongs to everyone, then the Vatican also belongs to everyone. We therefore look forward to it’ opening of a synagogue and a mosque all’ within its territory, so as to ensure freedom of worship for all the faithful of the Abrahamic religions". The Pope's statement, according to him, it is «disconcerting and at the same time demagogic. Refers to a’ era in which dialogue between Jews and Christians was at a much less developed level".
