Five hundred years ago Machiavelli warned us about the influence of appearance in politics. In fact, he had already understood, the Florentine secretary, that the true mixture capable of generating causes and effects was simple appearance. And it has essentially gone like this over the course of these months with the rise of the increasingly ideological Greta Thumberg. Two tight braids, clean face and zero hints of a smile: a contemporary symbol of a constraint “Davide” against an inexorable Goliath, climate change which is cited so much by the young activist.
Yet many points don't add up, starting from the purely scientific aspect up to what Greta has actually represented over the course of these months. It becomes necessary to reflect on the media and ideological tsunami that Greta has implemented on many different occasions until it reaches the most important buildings of power and brings millions of students to the streets.
Who during these years has had the opportunity to study the types of modern propaganda and the different ones “wars of informations”, knows well that the best way to convey messages is to make use of untouchable ambassadors, incapable of being disliked by public opinion, defenseless and in every sense attractive because they are simple and intuitive. If in Greta's place there had been a scientist with numerous skills at an academic and global level, most likely the mechanism we are witnessing today would never have been activated.
Any scientist, however authoritative, it would never have had the necessary media impact, even capable of catalyzing the attention of the world's powerful and influencing – a few months before the vote – European electoral dynamics. Yet that's how it went: instead of any man, there was a not exactly anonymous girl. At this point the inevitable tsunami had its effects: in Italy squares full of kids and placards, Greta Thumberg defined as a young climate messiah, young people shouting on a stage claiming that “Piazza del Popolo will disappear in ten years if we don't listen to Greta”, and politicians ready to legitimize all Thumberghian theories because the young Swede is a trend, and the trend brings votes.

The first results we have received demonstrate that “the Greta effect” it is no longer reduced to the media, but it forcefully affected the political environment, leading the Green parties to not so obvious results. In Germany, the Greens have established themselves as the nation's second political force, behind only Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU-CSU, which however records a visible decline compared to previous electoral rounds. Co-leader Annalena Baerbock thanked the voters by declaring: “Now let's change this Europe together for climate protection, for democracy, against populism and for human rights.”
Also in France there was a significant result for environmentalists: who listed it Europe-Ecology the Greens, the ecological party led by Yannick Jadot, is the third with the 12,8 percent of the vote, behind only Le Pen and Macron. The Greens have established themselves as the leading party in Ireland by defeating the competition with over 20% of consensus in the capital. As a whole we will have in the next European Parliament 69 seats for the Greens, 17 more than in the previous legislature.
We partly owe this result to the fall of the social democrats in many European contexts and therefore the green phenomenon should not be considered as something new or emerging. So much so that they have represented a movement cornerstone since the 1980s, however, always recording decisive results, due above all to their rooting in Northern Europe given by the secularized Germanic tradition. Today it seems to have actually become the ideological basis of a left now in crisis in its post-'68 values, Precisely for this reason Greta was immediately adopted by various politically correct circles as a substitute for the much rhetoric implemented so far.
We cannot be sure how influential his figure was in the European outcome, given in this case the historical roots of the areas in which it established itself. However, especially among the younger ones, his intervention represented an important contribution to expressing their preferences and orienting political priorities. But once again, as often happens in politics, the paradigm of appearances matters more than anything, to the point of allowing a media movement to choose over our lives.
