by Marcello Veneziani
A few days ago in Cape Verde I was boarding from the airport on the island of Sal. Since I was Italian, a black Cape Verdean with a shining white smile made a point of telling me that that airport had been built by Mussolini.
He accomplished it in six months, was inaugurated on Christmas Eve 1939 with an Italian airlift of Savoia-Marchetti aircraft from the Ala Littoria, then of the Italian Transcontinental Air Lines company. Italy overcame the hostilities of the French and Germans who did not want this Italian primacy. Initially there were postal planes leaving from Rome, they connected Seville and Lisbon to Cape Verde and continued to Rio de Janeiro and Recife. Mussolini's son took care of it, Bruno, who was the youngest Italian military pilot to 17 years and fell while flying in the war. Mussolini dedicated a famous book to him, I talk to Bruno. The airport and the airline were supposed to serve Italian emigrants to South America but then served Cape Verdeans to emigrate, for trade and tourism. But on the African island, unlike us, it is possible to remember Mussolini's works without incurring the crime of apologia for fascism and racism.
As soon as I returned to Italy I was hit by the daily dose of alarm for the fascism in power. Sandro Veronesi raged on TV, Nanni Moretti, Roberto Saviano, Fabio Fazio, the usual tour company, who launched the anti-fascist SOS on the subject of the security decree and migrants. The paradoxes of life: a black remembered Mussolini as a kind of benefactor, or rather of Santa Claus, given that the gift to Cape Verde arrived at Christmas, while in Italy another Cape Verde, the Northern League member Salvini, He is seen as a fascist and persecutor of migrants. Veronesi, in the grip of an anti-fascist delirium, he played trombone under the admiring gaze of Lilli Gruber, saying: he started with the Sinti, perhaps referring to the bulldozers against the illegal houses of the Casamonicas, now eliminate the migrants, soon he will eliminate the paralytics... And he repeated: fascism is back. A science fiction film.
Then you go to the Opera House and you find yourself there too Rigoletto was anti-fascist: the director Daniele Abbado abuses Verdi, sets his work of 1851 at the time of Salò and gives us the usual politically correct bullshit, forcing the past, the art, music in today's obsessions. And the hustlers in the newspapers wave. Go to the cinema and, to avoid having the same soup, go see the preview of a film dedicated to a hero of the First World War, Luigi Rizzo, d'Annunzio in Fiume. But the movie, The destiny of men, turns to World War II, in which Rizzo has nothing to do; but it serves to whip up the usual rant about the Nazis and to air an anti-fascist Rizzo, he was put on trial after the war for the honors he received from the fascist regime...
At this point you are tempted to take off again and return toSal Island, which is the Salt Island and not the contraction of Salò. Fortunately, TV does not reflect the country but is its surreal caricature. And the intellectuals of the left do not express the thoughts of the Italians but the grotesque staging of their personal nightmares and their sectarian paranoia.
We are not at all enthusiastic about the government in office and we have many doubts about its first moves. But it's enough for us to hear these acid-red sermons, these calls to arms of intellectuals and politicians, to reevaluate Salvini &C. Thinking back to the African who remembered Mussolini, the mocking words of a fascist song came back to me: “Black face, we will take you to Rome, freed. You will be kissed by our sun, you will be in a black shirt too. Black facet, you will be Roman..." You want to see that it was the Duce who invited the migrants to us?
