“The observance of Lent is the bond of our militia; with it we distinguish ourselves from the enemies of the Cross of Jesus Christ; with it we ward off the scourges of divine wrath; with that, protected by heavenly help during the day, we fortify ourselves against the princes of darkness. If we abandon ourselves to such relaxation, it is all to the detriment of the glory of God, to dishonor of the Catholic religion, at risk for Christian souls; nor should there be any doubt that such negligence cannot become a source of misfortune for peoples, of ruins in public affairs and misfortunes in private affairs" (Constitution Non ambigimus of Benedict XIV, 30 maggio 1741).
