By order of the Sultan of Brunei, one of the richest men in the world, from this year the new penal code comes into force in the small South-East Asian country which introduces crimes and penalties inspired by the most stringent precepts of sharia, Islamic law, such as the death sentence by stoning for homosexuals and amputation for thieves.

We are not talking about ancient laws dating back to the Middle Ages but about the new legislative reform in force in 2019 in Brunei. Per volere del sultano Hassanal Bolkiah, one of the richest men in the world and in power continuously since 1967, in fact, from next week all citizens of the small south-east Asian kingdom will be subject to the new penal code based on sharia, ancient Islamic law. In reality, the local government had announced the fundamentalist turn for some time by introducing new rules little by little, new crimes and increasingly severe penalties such as the ban on drinking alcohol and the obligation to go to the mosque for Friday prayers, but now the transformation appears complete.
The turning point had come in 2014 when Brunei became the first country in Southeast Asia to officially adopt Sharia law. News that was greeted with international protests, so much so that it pushed the sultan to postpone its concrete application. Since then, however, increasingly stringent precepts and more severe penalties have been gradually introduced, leading to the amputations and stonings of this year.. Various human rights organizations have raised the alarm, denouncing the distortion of a penal code which, collecting the strictest precepts of Islamic law, introduces crimes and penalties contrary to human rights. Amnesty International urged Brunei to “stop immediately” the implementation of the new rules and the related defined sanctions “profoundly wrong”. “Brunei's penal code is a deeply flawed piece of legislation because it contains a series of provisions that violate human rights”, explain by the humanitarian organization, adding: “As well as imposing cruel punishments, inhuman and degrading, clearly limits the rights to freedom of expression, religion and belief and codifies discrimination against women and girls”. Homosexuality which was already illegal in Brunei, with a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, it now provides for the death penalty, for example. The new laws apply to both Muslims, which make up approximately two-thirds of Brunei's population, both to non-Muslims and foreigners, although some crimes, like apostasy, they apply only to Muslims.
