The announced withdrawal of US troops from Syria would be a positive step, while control over the liberated territories should pass to the Damascus authorities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said this following the Astana-format summit on Syria. Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met earlier in the day in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi to discuss the implementation of the Astana Accords on the Syria peace process.

“During the interviews, the parties discussed how the plans announced by the United States to withdraw American troops from the north-eastern regions of the country will affect the further development of the situation in Syria. In our opinion, implementing such measures would be a positive step, it would help stabilize the situation in this region of Syria, where ultimately legitimate government control must be restored”, Putin said at a joint press conference.

The Russian president expressed hope that the withdrawal of US troops from Syria will actually take place.
