Let's also mark today's date among those that made history. The signing of the Treaty of Aachen between France and Germany opens an unprecedented chapter. Sworn enemies since the time of Charlemagne, with the peak of the rivalry in the two world wars, France and Germany strengthen their alliance. The new treaty strengthens that of the Elysée signed on 22 January 1963 - Exactly 56 years ago – by then Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and French President Charles De Gaulle. There is no point in trying to decide whether the agreement is more to the advantage of Macron or Merkel. The treaty remains historic for many reasons.
Here are some.
1. France will fight for Germany to have a place in the club of countries with the right of veto at the United Nations, until now reserved for the victors of the Second World War: the 20th century ends definitively.
2. France and Germany intend to raise «their bilateral relations to a new level» to prepare «for the challenges facing the two countries and Europe in the 21st. century". And this in the context of the convinced recognition «of an international order based on rules and multilateralism, at the center of which stands the United Nations". Translated: with this axis taken to a new level it is very clear who will make the decisions in Europe and who will have to accept them.
3. «The two countries are deepening their collaboration in the context of European politics. They are committed together to an effective and strong foreign policy and to strengthening and deepening the economic and monetary union.". Translated: we will make a European army and the common currency will not be touched.
Sum up, rings the death knell for the European Union as the founders had dreamed of it. At least now it's clear who's in charge, black on white. The English understood first of all that it was time to return to being a fully sovereign nation. What will be the reaction of other countries?? And above all: our politicians who argue with France for surreal reasons have understood the extent of what is happening? Because nobody or almost nobody talks about it?
